How to choose the density of the hair prosthesis

Density indicates the amount of hair implanted in the prosthesis compared to a reference standard.

It does not represent “how much better it covers.”

It does not mean “the higher it is, the better the result.”

Incorrect density is the leading cause of an artificial appearance.

Remember that during the first few weeks, the prosthesis goes through a natural settling-in phase.

Washing, brushing, and daily use can cause a slight initial physiological hair loss and a gradual adaptation of the fibers.

Over time, it adapts to your habits, achieving an increasingly natural result.

What do the density percentages mean

90% – Medium-light natural

Balanced and realistic.
Excellent for credible results.

100% – Standard natural

Full density but still natural.
It is the most versatile choice.

110% – Medium-full

Visually thick hair.
Suitable for young men with very full sides.

120% – Full

Obvious volume.
Requires consistency with age and natural hair.

130% – Very full

Voluminous and pronounced effect.
Recommended only in specific cases (very young clients with naturally very thick hair).

140% – Extra full

High density, very structured effect.
Not suitable for most cases.
Requires prior technical evaluation.

⚠️ There is no “best” density. There is only the one consistent with your case.

Golden rule

The density must be consistent with:

If your side hair is medium-length, a density of 130% or more creates a visual disconnect.

The hair replacement must look like a natural continuation, not an artificial enhancement.

Recommended density by age group

18–30 years→ 110%–130%

30–45 years→ 90%–110%

45+ years→ 90%-100%

Densities over 120% are suitable only in specific cases.

These values are indicative. Density is measured in hairs per cm² and can vary depending on the length, color, and thickness of individual hairs.

Why is the choice often within a RANGE (e.g., 100–110%)?

Density is not a rigid mathematical measure.

It depends on:

  • hair length
  • thickness
  • color
  • styling
  • area covered

This is why a range is indicated rather than a fixed number.

Furthermore, during the initial uses, a hairpiece goes through a phase of:

  • settling
  • natural physiological hair loss
  • volume stabilization

Choosing slightly above the ideal density (e.g., 110% instead of 100%) can help maintain a balanced result over time.

This does not mean choosing “fuller”, but rather anticipating the natural evolution of the hairpiece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does density indicate the grams of the prosthesis?

No. The weight depends on the dimensions and length. Density is a visual percentage of hair per cm².

Does the prosthesis cause hair loss?

A slight physiological loss over time is normal. It is not a defect.

Can I choose 130% or 140%?

Only if age and side effects permit. In most cases, it is excessive.

Do I need to take the haircut into account?

Yes, and remember that it is easier to remove density than to add it.
